OVHcloud vs Scaleway: French providers, different products

OVHcloud's committed VPS pricing compared with Scaleway's BASIC2 instances and STARDUST entry plan, including the block-storage caveat.

Recorded data: 2026-10-25 · Comparison question: What changes when a French VPS is committed for 12 months versus billed as a bare instance?

Scope: EUR plans captured on 2026-10-24, compared on recorded price, commitment, storage inclusion and region evidence.

Commitment versus flexible billing

OVHcloud's recorded price is the 12-month commitment rate from its public order catalog; the month-to-month rate is higher and noted in the limitations. Scaleway bills instances monthly with no long commitment in the captured data.

For a short experiment, Scaleway's flexibility is worth the higher monthly rate. For a stable year-long service, OVHcloud's committed rate is the relevant number.

Storage is not included the same way

OVHcloud's VPS plans include local NVMe storage. Scaleway's BASIC2 instances are arm64 compute without bundled local disk, and STARDUST1-S is an entry instance whose price excludes persistent block storage.

The STARDUST entry price is therefore not comparable to a plan with an 80 GB disk until the volume price is added. The table shows storage as unknown for STARDUST rather than zero.

Architecture

Scaleway's BASIC2 line is arm64 (Ampere). That is a real advantage for workloads with arm64 builds and a real obstacle for x86-only binaries. OVHcloud's VPS plans are x86-64 in this dataset.

Check container image architecture and any proprietary agents before choosing arm64; a cheap arm64 plan that cannot run your stack is not cheap.

Backups and regions

OVHcloud includes a daily 24-hour backup and sells premium 7-day backup and snapshots. Scaleway's captured sources do not state a backup inclusion for these plans, so backup is unknown here.

Only the GRA region was captured for OVHcloud VPS plans, while Scaleway's BASIC2 plan lists Paris and Amsterdam. Treat both region lists as partial.

Limits of this comparison

  • Scaleway backup terms were not captured for these plans.
  • OVHcloud region coverage is limited to GRA in this dataset.
  • No independent performance measurements exist for either provider.

Facts come from provider-published sources recorded in the catalog. Independent performance, support and reliability measurements are not available, so this comparison does not rank those dimensions.
